About Me

Dr. Rongshan Yu received his PhD degree in electrical engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS, Singapore). In 1999, he joined Centre for Signal Processing, Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore) as a Research Engineer. After that, he was with Dolby Laboratories, USA as a staff engineer from 2006-2009, and Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) as Senior Scientist and Head of Signal Processing Department from 2009-2017.  His research interests include statistical signal processing and its applications in speech/audio processing, multimedia, and bioinformatics. He is the author of more than 70 publications and holds more than 20 US/international patents (including pending applications).

Dr. Yu actively participated in the international ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 (Moving Picture Expert Group, or MPEG) since 2002, for which he has more than 10 technical contributions in scalable lossless audio compression, binaural audio rendering, and interactive audio application format. He was leading the development of MPEG-4 Audio Scalable to Lossless (SLS) standard (ISO/IEC 14496-3:2005/Amd.3:2006) in which the technology developed by Dr. Yu was adopted as Reference Model. In 2003, he received the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Gold award in the Open Category, for his contributions to the scalable to lossless audio compression technology. He also contributed to the development of an adaptive predictor technology for the lossless audio coding which was incorporated in the MPEG-4 Audio Lossless (ALS) standard under the high performance profile (ISO/IEC 14496-3:2005/Amd.2:2006). Both technologies were published as normative MPEG standards in 2006. In recognition of his significant contributions to the advancement of digital audio signal processing and MPEG audio coding standard, he was awarded the National Technology Award, Singapore in 2007. He also led a team to work on China Audio-Visual Standard (AVS) Lossless Audio Coding standard, for which the technical proposals from his team were adopted by AVS as Reference Model of this standard in March 2010.

Dr. Yu is the Associate Editors of IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing (2012-2016), and IEEE Access online journal (2014 - present), and he served as TPC co-chairs, track/session chairs and TPC members for various conferences in the areas of signal processing and multimedia. He is the editor of MPEG audio standards including ISO/IEC 14496-3/AMD.5 (MPEG-4 Audio Scalable Lossless Coding) and ISO/IEC 14496-5:2001/Amd.10 (SSC, DST, ALS, and SLS reference software). He is a senior member of the IEEE, and a Fellow of IET.
